Ueno Zoo

Ueno Zoo (恩賜上野動物園 Onshi Ueno Dōbutsuen) is about a five minute walk from Ueno Station, a main point on the Yamanote line, and is set within the beautiful Ueno Park, a melting pot of parkland, museums and other attractions.

The zoo is home to more than 2600 individuals representing over 460 species, highlights include the red panda, Western lowland gorilla, aye ayes, fennec foxes and shoebills.


The zoo also has a number of restuarants and vending machines, with ice creams, hot and cold drinks and meals. There are also picnic spots. Toilets and gift shops are also readily available.

  • Closed Mondays, or Tuesdays if Monday is a public holiday
  • Admission Fee: Adult: 600JPY, 65+: 300JPY, 13-15yrs: 200JPY, 0-12yrs: free
